PHOS Civic Association (Photography of society) was founded by a group of photographers (Michal Fulier, Andrej Lojan, Laco Maďar, Matúš Zajac) and theorists (Marián Paukov, Ivana Pástorová) in order to point on the meaning of documentary photography, which bears the humane message about mankind and represents an expression of opinion on social issues. They are united by their mutual effort to respond sensitively to the absurd nature of postmodern consumer society, the rash inflow of trivial pictures which reflect the reality in an artificial way and act as if they had understood this world via their pseudo- colourity or on the other hand that it should represent the irony in their reaction.

The purpose in artistic value of the photographs of PHOS photographers is the initiation of association of perception and feelings from which the beauty of expression is resulting. And all of this is in the spirit of Bresson´s tradition of decisive moment – in the split of a second to capture the matter of reality through decisive creative perception and observation.

PHOS is a challenge for photographers who wish to responsibly develop the idea of "Photography of decisive arts”, and thus to enrich the documentary work.
